Greetings,

I'm trying to install Plucene via CPAN on a Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther).
make test fails, as shown in the transcript below. Any suggestions?

Cheers,

You can try to add this patch:
http://www.kasei.com/pipermail/plucene/2004-May/000148.html

but I'm not sure that this is the problem.

Marvin,

I've had the 'too many files open' error in Panther from other apps,=20=20
like BBedit.

The default is like 256. See:

http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2001/qa1005.html

You might try this from

Thank you for the tip Marco, but patching Utils.pm did not solve the=20
problem.

Issuing that ulimit command then rerunning make test resulted in=20
success. Is there any compelling reason why Plucene needs a lot of=20
files open? I've run into the limit myself with an indexer app that=20
tried to write to 1000 different temp files. It was possible to mod=20
the app so that it used 100 temp files instead. Is the high file open=20
count a bug or part of Plucene's architecture?

Thank you for the tip Marco, but patching Utils.pm did not solve the=20
problem.

Issuing that ulimit command then rerunning make test resulted in=20
success. Is there any compelling reason why Plucene needs a lot of=20
files open? I've run into the limit myself with an indexer app that=20
tried to write to 1000 different temp files. It was possible to mod=20
the app so that it used 100 temp files instead. Is the high file open=20
count a bug or part of Plucene's architecture?

I would say a bug.

Patches, as they say, welcome...

Hi Folks,

Not sure if this is the appropriate place, but just wanted to thank you the
community for the work thus far on Plucene.

I have just implemented it as a search tool for Movable Type. It is working
great.

You will soon see it powering sites like www.gizmodo.com, www.gawker.com,
www.wonkette.com, and www.cmswire.com.

I did run across an issue with the Index::Writer falling over after about
350 documents. But if I clear and reinstantiate about every 300, I was able
to get about 20k blog posts in the the various indicies.

I'll post more on that error once I have time to debug again.

In the meantime thank you all very much and great job with porting Lucene.

Best regards,
Brice

For some reason, delete_term isn't working. It chugs away for a few
seconds, but ultimately the record still exists. This is causing me
problems, as I need to update the index in place without rebuilding it
(it takes 3 hours to rebuild). Here's the relevant info:

      $reader->delete_term( Plucene::Index::Term->new({
		                                 'field'=>'family_id', 'text'=>$fid}));

I know that $fid is correct because it prints right above this line.
If I run my updater, records that were supposed to be removed then added
back in just end up in there twice.

Is there something more that I need to do? Do I have to close the
reader before the writer starts its job?

Thanks,
Michael
